The Bequeathed Gifts of the Hierophants

The arts and craftsmanship of Kampanget can be traced back to at least 600 years ago. Among the many designs, Phra Somkor (a votive tablet portraying the Buddha seated in a meditative pose with a flame-like halo background) and Pra Leela (a votive tablet portraying the Buddha in a sway-like walking pose) were classified as the Benjapakee.

In 1910, King Rama IV officially named the province as the Kamphang Province, and ordered restoration, construction, and city planning to revive the province. Kamphang Province has many temples that are divided by a city line; and these temples are commonly referred to the left- or right- regional temples. Some of the left regional temples include Wat Pak Kaew, Wat Kha Law Thai, Wat Ba Mun, Wat Avayeh, and Wat Chang Nong.

The right regional plaine is also known as Tong Satti, some temples in the right regional area include Wat Boron Mathat, Wat Jedi Kantong, Wat Pit Koon, Wat Lersi, Wat Bam Dum.

In B.E. 1983, the eleven great hermits commissioned the making of these votive tablets and subsequently enshrined it in various pagodas throughout the city. The tablets include both chin ngern (alloy) and nur din (terracotta).

Per the inscriptions written the Golden Plaque discovered at the Central Temple--Wat Boron Mahathat, the purposes of these tablets are as followed:

According to the inscription on the Golden Plaque:

In the year of B.E. 1983, the Three Hierophants--Lersi Tha Fai, Lersi Tha Wor, Lersi Narod--commissioned the making of these sacred tablets with the 11 great hermits. The tablets were subsequently blessed and consecrated in esoteric rituals.

These tablets are our gifts to the People and the City. Most tablets are made from a mixtures of 1000 different kinds of clay and pollen.

For those who encounter harms, place the tablet on top of your head and thou shall be protected.

For those who are in a war or conflict, submerge the tablet into floral oil, recite the Sutra of Recollecting of the Triple Jewels three times, then apply the oil on one’s body, and thou shall be protected.

For those who seek maha aumlak, submerge the tablet into floral oil, recite the Sutra of Nawa Honak Koon seven times and all wishes will be granted

For those who seek maha satti, submerge the tablet into floral oil, recite the Sutra of Itipiso seven times and all wishes will be granted

Anyone who are in possession of these tablets--both chin ngern or nur din--can wear them around your neck.

The last inscribed stanza, perhaps, received the most attention, “Blessings and boons will be bestowed upon to those who posses these tablets. Possessors of the tablets shall not experience destitution and misfortune ever again.”

Many Thais deeply believe in the message conveyed by the Golden Plaque that these tablets will bring them great fortune.
