Ayutthaya Period, Phra Yodthong,
18-19 century in Thai Buddhist calendar.

Phra Yodthong—the flagpole Buddha—is a Buddha statuette set on the top of a flagpole used during war, symbolizing the hope to return with victory and glory. Blessed by the royal court’s Brahmanic priests with the power of Konggrapan (invincibility), these Phra Yodthong were made in gold, silver, and other metals. The royalties used the gold Phra Yodthong as a form of talisman for protection while Generals, high commanders, and high-ranking officials would use their silver Phra Yodthong to set on top of their flagpoles during wars to ward off their enemies and to bring victory.

Made in the U-Thong period, this silver Phra Yodthong was likely the possession of a General or high-ranking commander. Preserved in excellent condition with visible traces of use, this Phra Yodthong was likely used during wars in the Ayutthaya period and survived to this modern day.
